Episode 1: Lobstermen are Becoming

America’s Newest Farmers

In this episode:

Some years ago, Briana Warner identified what might be a risky yet exciting opportunity. The Maine lobster fishing fleet worked only seasonally, generally June to November. The rest of the time the boats were largely idle, and local economies felt the pinch. Briana thought that a new additive industry–exactly off-season with lobster–-could produce a triple win. It would bolster local economic vitality, produce a product that was ecologically advantageous for the sea, and create ultra healthy food for retail customers. Enter the sea-grown kelp business. The first few years were predictably bumpy, but now Briana’s company, Atlantic Sea Farms, is hitting its business goals year after year and is the largest line grown kelp company in the U.S. She and her team’s ingenuity and persistence has led to a success that continues to reverberate locally and nationally. They are providing a positive new model in the food industry for responsibly grown food that is seriously healthy and delicious.
